Inflammation as a Cause of Parkinson’s

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

In addition to telling you about Catherine’s Choice™ Aloe Vera, as I said last time, I want to make this blog a source of health information that you may not otherwise discover. I found some fascinating information on a subject of great interest to the elderly and to those who love them that is surprisingly appropriate as a warning to young folk as well, and even to parents of infants and anyone undergoing vaccinations.

The subject is serious neurological diseases, primarily Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS (Lou Gehrig ’s disease) about which there has been a recent success in unconventional treatment. (I have covered this recently in my column “Warren’s Words” in Catherine’s Choice™, a magazine published by Aloes International, Inc. of Orlando, Florida.)

The cause of these diseases has long been a mystery. Genetics and simply aging have been suspected, but now attention has shifted to inflammation. A link between age-related neurological disorders and cardiovascular disease had been noticed.

In recent years, leading medical researchers realized that the accepted reasons for heart attacks and strokes, excess cholesterol, clogged arteries, etc., did not explain why autopsies of heart attack victims often showed no such condition. The facts did not fit the theoretical expectations. They began to realize that inflammation, often sub-clinical or too mild to be readily apparent, was the real primary cause. This lead to other conclusions, too complex for this space, but basically amounting to prolonged stress, physical or psychological, as the cause for that inflammation.

Discovery of the link between cardiovascular and neurological disorders led directly to the realization that Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are also correlated to other
Inflammatory conditions: Diabetes, autoimmune ailments, obesity, toxic metal exposure, infections and trauma.

They have learned that no matter which of these or other conditions starts the problem, the damage to the brain is caused by activation of the brain’s immune cells, the microglia. This activation actually destroys part of the brain. This damage is, of course, permanent, although the brain retains amazing powers of recovery nevertheless.

One of the strongest links to brain damage is the all too common exposure we have to pesticides and herbicides. This exposure is the leading environmental cause of Parkinson’s, and probably of Alzheimer’s as well. The dangerous chemicals are so common, so prevalent, that we take them pretty much for granted and do not realize how truly hazardous they are. Onset of the resulting damage is usually so slow that we do not connect the dots between cause and effect. When you think of the extent of our exposure in homes, in gardens, on our lawns and golf courses, it is quite alarming, especially when you learn how very small the amount can be to cause real damage.

Some individuals are much more sensitive than others to such toxins. And there is often synergism between different chemical agents, so that a very minute exposure, called a sub-toxic dose, which causes no apparent harm, can set the stage so that a much later sub-toxic dose of an entirely different chemical can bring on the disease.

I just realized that although this blog is intended to be thought-provoking, hopefully leading readers to do further and more serious research, consulting with physicians, etc., and really was not intended to be promotional of our product, Catherine’s Choice™ Aloe Vera, it just so happens that aloe vera is an aid in detoxification as well as a leading natural anti-inflammatory!

It seems I can’t think about health matters at all without returning to aloe vera. I guess that is because events of my life convinced me that my late wife, Catherine, lived thirty good years after we discovered the benefits of the internal use of aloe vera, and that was at a time of serious health problems that did threaten her life.

I also can not help but attribute my own relatively youthful condition to the daily intake of Catherine’s Choice™ Aloe Vera Capsules. I often have 20 hour days and help in running six small businesses. I play wind instruments professionally, read a lot, follow the news closely, exercise up to 20 minutes two or three times a week (I know that isn’t much, but it is an improvement over the past), try to study Spanish and Internet Marketing, write TV advertising copy, party when possible, and in general am seldom idle, unless you consider sunbathing idling. I was born in 1924, which makes me

Your youthful octogenarian,
Warren

P.S. There is a lot more important information on the subject of the dangers of neurological disease at any age, including foods to avoid and foods to enjoy while protecting your nervous system. It is very important to minimize stress of all kinds. Take no unnecessary vaccinations, and be certain they really are needed.

One of my most important sources of information was the April 2009 issue of “The Blaylock Wellness Report” by Dr. Russell Blaylock, a nationally recognized board-certified neurosurgeon, health practitioner, author and lecturer. He attended the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Blaylock recently retired from his neurosurgical duties to devote his full attention to nutritional studies and research. He has authored three books on nutrition and wellness.

Dr. Blaylock previously served as clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, and is currently a visiting professor of biology at the Belhaven College, also in Jackson.

The Blaylock Wellness Report is a publication of Newsmax Media, Inc. and Newsmax.com. It is published monthly at $54 per year and is offered online and in print. To subscribe call 1-800-485-4350 or e-mail wellnessreport@newsmax.com.

A Look At Treatment of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Last time I promised to expand on Catherine’s medical history in order to give you the full picture of what aloe vera saved her from, but on checking the home page I found that this has already been done. Besides, your interest is more in what aloe vera can do for you than in what it has done for others.

Moreover, I have other ways to help with your health concerns besides informing you about Catherine’s Choice™ Aloe Vera. I want to make this blog a source of health information that you may not otherwise discover.

For several years I have subscribed to different health newsletters by alternative medicine practitioners who report on methods of healing that are forgotten or undiscovered by the medical establishment. Often there are new breakthroughs or discoveries that have been duly reported in the professional journals and other publications of the establishment but are then ignored by most physicians, probably because they are so busy and have so much information on new drugs from the pharmaceutical companies that they simply can not keep up. Whatever the reason, it is distressing to find that information of great potential value is first ignored and then resisted by far too many professionals.

Many times a simple change in diet can make a major improvement in a patient’s health, but the doctor prefers to prescribe a toxic drug that may and often does have the opposite effect, causing a worsening of the condition rather than improvement. Or, if it does work, it may have a serious side effect. This is not entirely the fault of the physician, but is a byproduct of the system that has developed over the years. It is connected with the great risks and rewards inherent in pharmaceutical research. Once a drug is approved by the FDA, a very expensive procedure, the sales people start calling on the doctors to persuade them to prescribe it.

If you want more specific information on this subject, I recommend the works of Kevin Trudeau, as well as free publications you can often find in health food stores. My point here is that I will be presenting non-establishment information at this location that I hope and believe will be useful and helpful to you. If I do not give you the information here, I will tell you where to find it. More likely, I’ll present a brief condensation and tell you where to get more information if you want it.

That is the plan, and I will start right now by telling you that there is a great new development in the treatment of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which until now has been considered incurable and always fatal.

ALS (amyolateral sclerosis) is a severe neurological disease that progresses rapidly and always results in death. There is one FDA-approved medication that slows it down, rizulole (brand name Rilutek), but that has been the best anyone could do up to now.

Researchers in Pisa, Italy worked with a group of ALS patients in the same stage of the disease and administered rizulole to all of them. Then some of these patients were also given lithium, a common trace mineral often used by doctors to stabilize mood. Few doctors seem to realize that lithium is also neuroprotective, capable of protecting brain and nerve tissue from damage in strokes and in certain other neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Several years ago these researchers had genetically programmed mice to get ALS in order to test the effects of lithium. The results were remarkable and increased the life span of the mice. Now they have tested it on humans, with similar encouraging results.

Specifically, the results on the patients during a 15 month study were that of the patients who received no lithium but only the rizulole 30% died. None of the patients who did receive the lithium died, and the progression of the disease was significantly reduced.

The lithium carbonate used in the study is available only by prescription, but lithium orotate, a much safer form, is available over the counter. It does have a side effect if you take too much, trembling of the hands. And it can cause hypothyroidism if taken in doses of 20 mg or more, but you easily can and should have your thyroid function tested periodically, reducing the dosage if necessary. You should consult with your own physician before implementing any health idea you read about.

My source for this valuable information is the April, 2009 issue of Real Cures, by Dr. Frank Shallenberger, published monthly by Soundview Publishing, LLC. Subscriptions are $49 per year. Write to them at P.O. Box 8051, Norcross, GA 30091-8051 or call 800-728-2288. The April issue also contains articles on avoiding bypass operations, healing cancer, controlling hot flashes and an answer to a reader’s question about weight control
